The Bright Idea: Blue LEDs (1990)

In the early 1990s, Japanese scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura revolutionized lighting with the invention of the blue light-emitting diode (LED). This breakthrough enabled the creation of bright, energy-efficient white light by combining blue, green, and red LEDs.

The blue LED has drastically reduced global energy consumption, lighting our homes and offices more efficiently and supporting environmental conservation. For their groundbreaking work, the inventors received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014.
