Interactive Workshops

An interactive activity will be conducted with high school students to show the potential ways that Engineering and Computer Science can address grand challenges.

These interactive workshops are called ‘Hacking a Better Future’, and the workshops uses a hack-a-thons formate.

The Challenges

The challenges presented are relevant to modern day issues which future engineers and computer scientists would tackle. There are a total of six challenges:

• Battling Climate Change
• Rethinking Clean Water
• Improving Healthcare
• Enhancing Society with Robotics and Drones
• Gaming for Good
• Building Green Cities

Changing Perceptions

The idea is to challenge traditional perception of potential careers and impact of careers in engineering and computer science. These workshops are intended to show students how engineers and computer scientists can contribute to the betterment of society. By expanding the engineering and computer science careers to include a social justice lens, we anticipate more diversity in those students seeking impactful careers. This will allow high school students from equity deserving groups to visualize themselves in these careers.

IDEA NS has also opted to have current women engineering and computer science students to volunteer their time for these sessions, and act as role models for the students.
