Hockey Sticks have been carved by the Mi’kmaq people across Atlantic Canada. The current design of the hockey stick is based on the Mi’kmaq design, and they carved and sold hockey sticks since the early 1900s. In fact, the oldest known hockey stick, dating back to the mid-1830s, is currently preserved by the Canadian Museum of History, and is believed to be of Mi’kmaq origin. This piece of history not only highlights the sport's origins but also the important role of Indigenous craftsmanship in shaping the great sport.
